Every modern home has multiple electrical appliances of some sort. Although they are helpful in our daily lives, these devices come with risks and hazards. People don’t often think about the importance of electrical safety at home.
Electrical emergencies can happen at any time. However, you don’t need to be a professional to take steps to prevent electrical dangers in your home. Here are some useful tips to help you practice electrical safety.
Handle Your Cords and Plugs Correctly for Electrical Safety
When you disconnect an appliance, pull the plug and not the cord. This is a very common mistake that can damage the cord over time and lead to an electric shock or fire. Replace any cord or plug that shows signs of damage. Another way to prevent the wearing down of cords is to keep them away from heat and water sources.
Never Overload Your Outlets
Overloading outlets can lead to an electrical fire. This applies to using power strips as well. Most power strips can only handle equipment with a low power load. Power strips are not fit for refrigerators, ovens, space heaters, and other high power load appliances.
A power strip is better than an extension cord because an extension cord is only meant for temporary use. For electrical safety, don’t rely on power strips long-term. To avoid fire risks, it’s best to hire an electrician to add outlets to your home for your safety and convenience. If you need to use an extension cord temporarily, don’t run it under carpets or doors.
Electrical Safety and Appliances
Check the label when you shop for a new appliance or device to make sure it’s UL approved. This means the product has been tested and has passed specific safety requirements. When installing or repairing an appliance, always refer to the manual.
Heat-generating appliances should have space around them to let the air circulate. Do not place appliances near water sources.
If you have kids, consider enhancing electrical safety for children by investing in tamper-resistant receptacles (TTR).
